Steam Heater Cars, known in Canada as Steam Generator Units or SGUs, were introduced in the diesel era to provide steam heat to passenger trains in cooler weather. When passenger trains were hauled by steam locomotives, there was always a reliable source of steam. Unless a diesel locomotive was equipped with a boiler and water tank, heat could not be provided. This was before the days of electrical Head End Power for passenger cars. ..... cont./

Canadian Pacific - Early Maroon: #1802
DCC/Sound by ESU LokSound
EMD’s E-8 (and successor, E-9) were the quintessential North American passenger locomotive of the 1950s through the 1970s. 450 E8A and 46 E8B units were produced, with an additional 100 E9A and 44 E9B locos following. The first E8s were delivered in 1949, with the last E9 being produced in 1964. These units pulled passenger trains from coast to coast, and later became the backbone of Amtrak’s fleet in its early days. Many more were later used in commuter service before being retired. Today several units live on in museums and tourist railroads throughout North America.

Union X-3 Tankcar: UTLX - 1950s Paint
The X-3 cars were built in various capacities and configurations, including 6,500 gallon, 8,000 gallon and 12,000 gallon tanks. They were also built with single, double and triple domes. However, none of these variants were more numerous than the basic 10,000 gallon, single-dome version. From the 1920s onwards Union Tank Car (UTLX) fielded the largest fleet of tank cars in North America, and the 10,000 gallon X-3 accounted for nearly 13,000 of them!
The basic X-3 was used to haul fuel oil, gasoline, vegetable oils – essentially any liquid that did not require special handling features. These cars went EVERYWHERE

HO NSC 73’ Centerbeam Flatcar - Single Car
BC Rail (green)
One of the most overlooked, and yet common loads carried by North American railroads is finished wood products. Over 20,000 examples of this car were produced by National Steel Car, between 1987 through the mid 2000s, with some car variations along the way.
Whenever you see a general merchandise freight pass by you, there’s a high probability that you will see at least four or more centerbeams mixed in. But have you taken notice of the road names/ownership of those cars? Centerbeams are unique in that they are owned by large class I railroads, leasing companies and smaller shortlines.
