Tons of raw materials arrive at the paper mill complex in specialized cars including woodchip gondolas and pulpwood flats, along with a variety of chemicals and slurries that are shipped in tank cars. Finished products are also shipped by rail, typically in special service boxcars.

Flour mills have changed dramatically since the water-powered mills of the 1800s. The Walthers Cornerstone Red Wing Milling Co. captures the look and feel of contemporary mills in a size that fits most layouts. 1950s and later mills produce enormous quantities of flour and other milled grains. The elevator was, and in some place still is, the center of many rural communities. And in a few places it WAS the community. Steel elevators came into use in the 1920s as steel sheets became affordable. In fact, many wooden elevators were sheathed in steel for fire resistance.

The Walthers Cornerstone Water Street Freight Terminal is an ideal addition to trackside scenes from the early 1900s into the 1970s and beyond. Freight terminals were essential to railroads, handling less-than-carload lot (lcl) shipments. Loads arrived in boxcars or reefers and were transferred to trucks for local delivery. Each railroad serving a community had its own terminal, usually near the main passenger station or classification yard. Sanding Tower & Drying House is Ideal for Every Era

The Walthers Cornerstone Sanding Towers and Drying House kit is essential for adding realism to steam and diesel-era locomotive servicing scenes. Every railroad had its own ideas about sand house construction, so most were built to meet local conditions and seldom followed standard plans. Since diesels also needed sand, these structures remained in service years after the last steamer had been retired.

The Walthers Cornerstone Icehouse and Icing Platform brings back the heady days of railroading when fast freights forwarded meat and produce to market in ice-cooled reefers. From the 1880s to the 1970s, ice-cooled reefers were a fixture of railroading. Solid trains raced across country with their perishable loads riding in long strings of refrigerator cars. Supplying ice for the cars in transit was a huge industry. Railroads built ice houses and platforms, like this kit, about every 250-300 miles. Here, entire trains could be serviced and on the move in minutes.

Based on a typical wooden train station, the Walthers Cornerstone Clarkesville Depot is typical of wooden depots built throughout North America after 1900. Many railroads adopted standard depot designs used throughout their systems, and it was not uncommon for railroads to have several nearly identical depots along a line.

Based on typical early 20th Century industrial buildings the Walthers Cornerstone Union Crane and Shovel Co. is an easy-to-build kit that will add realism to older industrial areas on your layout. The building features a railcar door and grooves in the base to accept Code 80 rail. Brick curtain-wall construction, a tall center clerestory and large, multi-paned windows give Union Crane and Shovel a vintage industrial look that's perfect in any steam or diesel-era layout.
