Alco S2 is modeled after diesels built by the American Locomotive Company between 1949 and 1957. The 1,000-horsepower diesel-electric switchers were designed to replace older steam switchers. Almost 800 S4s featured a six cylinder 539 prime mover and rode on AAR Type A Trucks (which distinguished them from nearly identical S2s). Whether operated by their original owners or secondary owners, several of these venerable workhorses are still working in the 2020s and others are preserved in museums or on excursion railroads.

After a successful first run of road switchers (The RS-1), Alco’s second attempt at a versatile four-axle locomotive came in late 1946. This was the stylized RS-2, keeping similar features as the RS-1 (Long carbody and short front nose), but with many upgrades. The most notable features were the rounded carbody and a new 244 prime mover, which increased the horsepower to 1,500, a 500hp upgrade over the RS-1. With the added horsepower, the RS-2 was received well by railroads for its ability to tackle any service it was given.

The Thrall Car 2743 cubic foot gondola was introduced in 1995. This new 52' 6" interior length design was in response to the newly allowed increase in Gross Rail Loading (GRL) to 286,000 lbs (up from 263,000 lbs). This allowed an increase of the inside height from the previously standard 5'0" to a new standard of 5'6", giving it a 2,743 cubic foot capacity. Thrall produced over 6,700 of these from 1995 to 1999. The design resumed production under Trinityrail in 2005.
