Back when America moved by horses instead of horsepower, the local feed mill was an important trackside customer in towns of every size. Here, all types of grains were ground for animal feed and then bagged for easier handling and storage. They're still going strong in areas where livestock and dairy production requires a constant supply of feed. Many of those still in use have been expanded to include multiple modern concrete and steel elevator silos. Not too long ago, prototypes for the Cornerstone Al's Victory Service Gas Station like Al's could be found at every busy city intersection and along most major highways. Premium was 25 cents a gallon, maps were free and restrooms were clean. There was a mechanic on duty who could fix anything. And Al always wore a spotless uniform when he came out to pump your gas, check the oil and wash the windows.

The Walthers Cornerstone Icehouse and Icing Platform brings back the heady days of railroading when fast freights forwarded meat and produce to market in ice-cooled reefers. From the 1880s to the 1970s, ice-cooled reefers were a fixture of railroading. Solid trains raced across country with their perishable loads riding in long strings of refrigerator cars. Supplying ice for the cars in transit was a huge industry. Railroads built ice houses and platforms, like this kit, about every 250-300 miles. Here, entire trains could be serviced and on the move in minutes.

The prototypes for coal and oil dealers like the Walthers Cornerstone Goldenflame Fuel Co. were well known to everyone in town. Shoehorned alongside mainlines and sidings, these businesses sold coal for home heating by the bagful or the ton and delivered to your house. Seen alone or in groups wherever oil is found, Walthers Cornerstone Walking Beam-Horse-Head Oil Pump kit is a great way to model a part of this vital industry anywhere on your N Scale layout. Finding oil is hard work - and so is getting it out of the ground. If the oil is thin enough and there's enough underground pressure, it may flow into the well on its own. This may continue for a few hours or a few years, but in time, the pressure drops. Today, nearly 95% of all US oil wells require pumps to stay in production and one of the most common is the walking beam or horse head.

Rural grain elevators like the prototypes for the Walthers Cornerstone Valley Growers Association were somehow more than just a trackside industry. The elevator was, and in some place still is, the center of many rural communities. And in a few places it WAS the community. Butterfly-Style Station Platform Shelters are a great addition to the N Scale Walthers Cornerstone Union Station kit and other train depots.
 
For passengers at any station the platform was the first and last stop for every passenger. Tall walkways allowed passengers fast and easy access to and from trains. The hard surface made it easy to wheel baggage and mail carts into place, as well as supplies for the diner or other cars. And since no one liked being too wet or warm, a roof provided some protection from the elements.

As larger engines entered service, many railroads found their older coaling towers couldn't handle the increased demand. By the 1920s, railroads began contracting with outside firms to build new coaling towers. Concrete was the material of choice as it was easy to use, affordable, fireproof and weatherproof.
