One of Union Pacific’s hallmarks is their eclectic collection of motive power. However, the venerable Dash 9 of the time was ordered in few numbers by the UP - only 40 to be exact. Here we have 4 of those examples depicted late in their careers; repainted “lightning stripe” scheme, yellow frame stripe and wings on the nose. These unique repaints have many nuances; chiefly, they do not feature the American flag on their flanks.

Dash 9-44CW
UP #9696
Union Pacific

DC / DCC ready with 21-pin NEM socket

In 1995, Union Pacific purchased the Chicago and Northwestern and integrated the operation with its own. Re-painting of the recently acquired locomotives took place slowly, especially for the newer units (like the Dash 9s) whose paint jobs were only 1-2 years old at the time of the merger. Therefore, patched and renumbered CNW locomotives continued to operate on the UP system for many years.

Pleased with the results, UP would come back in 1996 and order 149 units (6738-6887). Through mergers with SP and CNW, UP became one of the largest owners of AC4400’s with over 900 production units. A few received UP’s newer “flag” scheme as depicted with UP 6700 which was originally UP 9997, UP’s very first AC4400.
