One of Union Pacific’s hallmarks is their eclectic collection of motive power. However, the venerable Dash 9 of the time was ordered in few numbers by the UP - only 40 to be exact. Here we have 4 of those examples depicted late in their careers; repainted “lightning stripe” scheme, yellow frame stripe and wings on the nose. These unique repaints have many nuances; chiefly, they do not feature the American flag on their flanks.

$209.98 USD

By the early 1970s, many first generation diesels were reaching the end of their service lives. The most common replacement locomotives became the GP40-2. EMD began production of the 16-cylinder, turbocharged, 3000 horsepower engine in 1972. These locomotive were developed for service where higher horsepower and faster service were preferable. A major feature for the GP40-2 was the introduction of the “dash 2” modular electrical cabinet. For more than 40 years, the GP40-2 has worked main line freights, locals, switching jobs, yard service, and helper service. Many remain in service today.

Athearn GENESIS G2 HO | SD60M Tri-Clops, UP #6237

[ATHG75515]

$249.98 USD

In 1984, EMD unveiled the first four SD60 demonstrator locomotives. The SD60 was equipped with a 3,800 horsepower, 16 cylinder, turbocharged 710G3A prime mover. Five years later, EMD began offering the SD60 with the wide nose “safety” cab with the infamous “Tri-Clops” 3-piece windshield, thus creating the SD60M. Union Pacific was the first road to order these new SD60M locomotives followed by Burlington Northern and SOO Line. BN’s SD60M locomotives went on to the merged BNSF while the SOO Line units went to Canadian Pacific. Some of the BNSF units found more mileage with Norfolk Southern and in lease service for CEFX.

In 1949, EMD introduced the GP7. The basic design followed most diesel switchers with the addition of a short hood instead of an end-cab. The hoods were also full height to better accommodate the diesel engine and mechanical and electrical components.

In 1954 EMD upgraded the GP7 to become the 1,750 horsepower GP9. Externally, the first GP9s were virtually unchanged from the last GP7s. Later versions would include different louver arrangements and the last ones would come without the frame skirting. The GP9 was available with all of the fuel tank, steam generator, and dynamic brake options as the GP7, including “torpedo tube” air tanks mounted on the roof.

Alco S2 is modeled after diesels built by the American Locomotive Company between 1949 and 1957. The 1,000-horsepower diesel-electric switchers were designed to replace older steam switchers. Almost 800 S4s featured a six cylinder 539 prime mover and rode on AAR Type A Trucks (which distinguished them from nearly identical S2s). Whether operated by their original owners or secondary owners, several of these venerable workhorses are still working in the 2020s and others are preserved in museums or on excursion railroads.
