The last stand of the standard cabs for Norfolk Southern was the Dash 9-40C. With the completion of this order for 125 units from GE, all subsequent orders were mandated by the FRA to be built with the wide safety cab. These units are offered in the Thoroughbred paint scheme for operations up to 2018, when the Dash 9-40C units were the first to be used as cores for the AC44C6M rebuild program at NS’s Juniata facility and at GE in both Erie and Fort Worth.

DC locomotive || with NEM 21-pin socket for DCC and DCC/sound conversion
Union Pacific was the largest buyer of the SD90MAC with 309 units total; the railroad designation was SD9043AC as they were delivered with the 710G engine rated at 4300hp. Taking delivery of the first locomotives in 1995 and the last in 1999; originally numbered in the 8000 series, these locomotives were renumbered in 2012 and some are still in service today. 3681 is one of only a few SD90MACs to receive the flag paint scheme.

DC locomotive || with NEM 21-pin socket for DCC and DCC/sound conversion
Canadian Pacific purchased 60 SD90MAC’s with delivery beginning in 1998. Their purpose was to pull freight between Ontario and British Columbia. The entire fleet has been rebuilt into SD70ACu’s as of 2020.

The Chicago & Northwestern RR Dash 9-44CW locomotives were the first production order of Dash 9s from GE with delivery beginning in late 1993. C&NW initially came without A/C units and a roof vent but were later modified to have A/C. Our models depict the As-Delivered configuration for the C&NW modelers who depict this great railroad right up to the C&NW/UP merger.

One of Union Pacific’s hallmarks is their eclectic collection of motive power. However, the venerable Dash 9 of the time was ordered in few numbers by the UP - only 40 to be exact. Here we have 4 of those examples depicted late in their careers; repainted “lightning stripe” scheme, yellow frame stripe and wings on the nose. These unique repaints have many nuances; chiefly, they do not feature the American flag on their flanks.

Apart from a few minor spotting features, BNSF 700-799 looked much the same as ATSF 600-699. The biggest difference, perhaps, was the large “BNSF” lettering on the hood, where “Santa Fe” used to reside. Opinions differed on the look, but no one could argue that the face of an iconic railroad had changed forever!

Each year from 1995 to 2005, NS placed an order with GE for Dash 9 series locomotives, with a grand total of 1215 units delivered. They are used in all types of mainline service. Some units were equipped with an APU (auxiliary power unit) mounted on the walkway, which operated to provide basic locomotive systems while the prime mover was shut down, potentially saving fuel. The units on offer are from the 1998 order.

DC with 21-pin NEM connector for DCC conversion
By the early 1970s, many first-generation diesels were reaching the end of their service lives. One of the most common replacement locomotives became the GP40-2. EMD began production of the 16-cylinder, turbocharged, 3000 horsepower engine in 1972. These locomotives were developed for service where higher horsepower and faster service were preferable. A major feature for the GP40-2 was the introduction of the "dash 2" modular electrical cabinet. For more than 40 years, the GP40-2 has worked main line freights, locals, switching jobs, yard service, and helper service. Many remain in service today.

In 1984, EMD unveiled the first four SD60 demonstrator locomotives. The SD60 was equipped with a 3,800 horsepower, 16 cylinder, turbocharged 710G3A prime mover. Five years later, EMD began offering the SD60 with the wide nose “safety” cab with the infamous “Tri-Clops” 3-piece windshield, thus creating the SD60M. Union Pacific was the first road to order these new SD60M locomotives followed by Burlington Northern and SOO Line. BN’s SD60M locomotives went on to the merged BNSF while the SOO Line units went to Canadian Pacific. Some of the BNSF units found more mileage with Norfolk Southern and in lease service for CEFX.

In 1989, Soo Line purchased 5 SD60M’s from EMD, numbered 6058-6062. They were all painted in this attractive and bright “Candy Apple” red scheme, and could be seen all over the system. Soo was known to run these as a single unit in hot-shot TOFC trains as in the image below. After Soo Line was folded into the CP Rail System, these units remained in Soo colors for a long while before finally being repainted in CP Rail colors.

In 1949, EMD introduced the GP7. The basic design followed most diesel switchers with the addition of a short hood instead of an end-cab. The hoods were also full height to better accommodate the diesel engine and mechanical and electrical components.
In 1954 EMD upgraded the GP7 to become the 1,750 horsepower GP9. Externally, the first GP9s were virtually unchanged from the last GP7s. Later versions would include different louver arrangements and the last ones would come without the frame skirting. The GP9 was available with all of the fuel tank, steam generator, and dynamic brake options as the GP7, including “torpedo tube” air tanks mounted on the roof.

After receiving an order for Dash 9-44CWLs with Canadian 4-window cabs, CN reverted to the standard 2-window configuration for its subsequent orders. However, to increase the crew’s visibility, CN requested that the front windows be modified with angled panes (these are known as “tear drop” windows).

In order to meet stricter diesel locomotive emissions standards imposed by EPA Tier II regulations, EMD modified the SD70MAC to create the SD70ACe and SD70M-2. Each model is powered by a 16-cylinder, 4300-horsepower diesel engine. On the SD70M-2, the prime mover drives an alternator and produces AC current that is rectified to DC current, which powers the traction motors. ......./continue
Part of CN’s large fleet of SD70M-2s, these units are equipped with operating marker lights for DPU service. As part of the railroad’s new heritage program, CN 8898 received the the special placards celebrating CN independence on the sides of its nose.
