Union Pacific, UP #8044

DCC/sound | SoundTraxx Tsunami

During the horsepower race of the 1990’s, EMD offered an “upgradable” SD90MAC. EMD’s 6000hp 256H prime mover was still being tested for reliability and issues at the time and UP needed power quickly. To combat this, EMD offered the SD90 with the 4300hp 710 prime mover in it’s place until the 256H prime mover was ready to be installed after successful testing. Unfortunately, the 256H was deemed too problematic and the conversion was never completed. UP classed these as SD9043MAC’s. They were factory delivered with the “We Will Deliver” slogan.

One of Union Pacific’s hallmarks is their eclectic collection of motive power. However, the venerable Dash 9 of the time was ordered in few numbers by the UP - only 40 to be exact. Here we have 4 of those examples depicted late in their careers; repainted “lightning stripe” scheme, yellow frame stripe and wings on the nose. These unique repaints have many nuances; chiefly, they do not feature the American flag on their flanks.

Union Pacific

DC / DCC ready with 21-pin NEM socket

In 1995, Union Pacific purchased the Chicago and Northwestern and integrated the operation with its own. Re-painting of the recently acquired locomotives took place slowly, especially for the newer units (like the Dash 9s) whose paint jobs were only 1-2 years old at the time of the merger. Therefore, patched and renumbered CNW locomotives continued to operate on the UP system for many years.

Built between April and Nov of 1995, SP placed an order for 279 AC4400CW’s from General Electric. Not only was this SP’s first dive into AC technology but was their largest single locomotive order (and last) in history. GE set up a maintenance shop in Denver CO to support these units. They featured Harris Locotrol II equipment for use in DPU service; although they were used for dedicated power on Colorado coal trains, they could also be found roaming the system wherever they were needed.

The Union Pacific acquisition of the Southern Pacific in 1996 saw the transfer of SP newly acquired AC4400CWs to a new railroad. As they were essentially brand new, there was no push to repaint these units and they existed for several years without modification. Eventually the AC4400CWs were renumbered with simple patches over the SP paint, but as this was done on a unit-by-unit basis where they were, the patches all had a measure of uniqueness.
