One of the greatest innovations in intermodal transportation came in the late 1970s with the development of the double stack container car by ACF Industries and Southern Pacific Railroad. From that point onward the container was king and the railroads and car builders searched for more efficient methods of transporting containers. In a revolutionary step from the early stack car designs, Gunderson introduced their Maxi-Stack 5-unit articulated well car in 1988.

In 2013, Greenbrier Companies introduced their new design of 89’ auto rack, the Multi-Max™. The new design allows for changing configurations from a Bi-Level to a Tri-Level (and back) without adding or removing decks. The racks are fully compatible with existing 89’ auto racks. Alco S2 is modeled after diesels built by the American Locomotive Company between 1949 and 1957. The 1,000-horsepower diesel-electric switchers were designed to replace older steam switchers. Almost 800 S4s featured a six cylinder 539 prime mover and rode on AAR Type A Trucks (which distinguished them from nearly identical S2s). Whether operated by their original owners or secondary owners, several of these venerable workhorses are still working in the 2020s and others are preserved in museums or on excursion railroads.
