Union X-3 Tankcar: UTLX - 1950s Paint
The X-3 cars were built in various capacities and configurations, including 6,500 gallon, 8,000 gallon and 12,000 gallon tanks. They were also built with single, double and triple domes. However, none of these variants were more numerous than the basic 10,000 gallon, single-dome version. From the 1920s onwards Union Tank Car (UTLX) fielded the largest fleet of tank cars in North America, and the 10,000 gallon X-3 accounted for nearly 13,000 of them!
The basic X-3 was used to haul fuel oil, gasoline, vegetable oils – essentially any liquid that did not require special handling features. These cars went EVERYWHERE

HO NSC 73’ Centerbeam Flatcar - Single Car
BNSF (brown)
One of the most overlooked, and yet common loads carried by North American railroads is finished wood products. Over 20,000 examples of this car were produced by National Steel Car, between 1987 through the mid 2000s, with some car variations along the way.
Whenever you see a general merchandise freight pass by you, there’s a high probability that you will see at least four or more centerbeams mixed in. But have you taken notice of the road names/ownership of those cars? Centerbeams are unique in that they are owned by large class I railroads, leasing companies and smaller shortlines.

The first "modern" 100-ton covered hopper the Soo Line received were 50 PS-2CD 4427 Covered Hoppers numbering from 70151-70249. On many cars, the Soo Line used reporting marks that ended in odd numbers, such as the case for this group of cars. These 6 numbers represent cars delivered in the original light gray paint with the right two full panels in blue and a small Colormark logo applied.

In May and June of 1978, the American Rail Box Car Company (Railbox) sought a unique design of 70-ton Plate C boxcars from FMC. These cars had a 6' plug door in addition to the regular 10' Youngstown slider. These "Combo Door" ABOX boxcars have since become one of the recognizable boxcars from the late 1970s to the present.
In the 1980s the Canadian Pacific repainted a few of the former Milwaukee Road PC&F 7633 Boxcars. In the photos in our collection we were able to locate only 2 numbers that were repainted and each was unique. Both cars received CP's Action Red paint and retained the original MILW reporting marks and numbers. Car 4225 was the more spartan of the two and received data only in a simple helvetica style lettering. Car 4231 was repainted earlier and received the CP Rail lettering and used a narrow, sans serif lettering style with stencil breaks. Both cars were still on the rails through the 2000s.

The GE DASH 9 Series debuted in 1993 with numerous electronic upgrades, building on the DASH 8 platform. Available with 4,000 or 4,400hp, they were well-received by the railroads and their employees, quickly becoming one of the most common locomotive types in North America. The DASH 9s remained in production until the early 2000s when it was superseded by GE’s “Evolution Series” ES40/44-series models.
