t was the mid-1970s, and the incentive per diem box car boom was just beginning. New, brightly painted box cars seemed to appear overnight. Many were lettered for various short lines. FMC (Food Machinery Corporation) was a significant builder of many of these cars. The 50’ outside post, non-terminating end box car, became the foundation for new per diem cars built in the 1970s. The 50’ FMC cars also varied in door configuration and style to better suit each customer. These models can still be seen today in the modern railroading scene.

Pullman-Standard dominated the covered hopper car market beginning in the 1950s. In 1967 the 4740 cubic foot capacity covered hoppers were the successor to the earlier 4427 cubic foot design. PS responded to increasing demand for efficiency by the railroads and shippers alike, carrying more per trip then the earlier covered hoppers. Designed to carry bulk commodities, such as grain, these cars roamed the rails of North America for decades, attesting to their utilitarian functionality. This car type can still be seen today in service.

The new model produced slightly more horsepower than the earlier design at 1,600 hp using Alco’s 12-cylinder, model 244 prime mover. Visually, the RS3 very similar to the RS2. Some railroads elected to employ theirs RS3 diesels in passenger/commuter service. It was appreciated for its versatility and reliability. RS3s were one of Alco’s shops more popular locomotives.
