The Thrall Car 2743 cubic foot gondola was introduced in 1995. This new 52' 6" interior length design was in response to the newly allowed increase in Gross Rail Loading (GRL) to 286,000 lbs (up from 263,000 lbs). This allowed an increase of the inside height from the previously standard 5'0" to a new standard of 5'6", giving it a 2,743 cubic foot capacity. Thrall produced over 6,700 of these from 1995 to 1999. The design resumed production under Trinityrail in 2005.

As demand for coiled steel increased, problems using standard gondolas led to new purpose-built coil cars with an interior trough in the 1960s. Today's cars are similar, but are built lighter and feature a one-piece removable hood to protect the valuable loads from the weather in transit.
Based on a 42' prototype with a distinctive fishbelly sidesill, these models feature prototypical painting and lettering, see-through walks, removable hood and inside floor detail.

There were 1,502 S-2s sold to North American Railroads. The versatility of the S-2s was evidenced by their service on class 1 shortline and industrial railroads. Atlas’ version is back in service, with new tooling, as well as a sound-equipped version for modeler enjoyment.

Five pieces of track make up one-quarter (90 degrees) of a 71" diameter circle (a full circle is 360 degrees). In general, 35.5" Radius Curved Track is best used to make wide, sweeping railroad curves to accommodate longer locomotives and rolling stock, and permit mainline operation at higher speeds. It can be placed on the outside of 33.25" radius curved track for excellent double-track mainline realism, and it can also be used to quickly lay track on a behind-the-scenes helix.
