It was the mid 1970s, and the incentive per diem box car boom was just beginning. New, brightly painted box cars seemed to appear overnight. Many were lettered for various short lines. FMC (Food Machinery Corporation) was a significant builder of many of these cars. The 50’ outside post, non-terminating end box car, became the foundation for new per diem cars built in the 1970s. The 50’ FMC cars also varied in door configuration and style to better suit each customer. These models can still be seen today in the modern railroading scene.

One of the greatest innovations in intermodal transportation came in the late 1970s with the development of the double stack container car by ACF Industries and Southern Pacific Railroad. From that point onward the container was king and the railroads and car builders searched for more efficient methods of transporting containers. In a revolutionary step from the early stack car designs, Gunderson introduced their Maxi-Stack 5-unit articulated well car in 1988.

Pullman-Standard dominated the covered hopper car market beginning in the 1950s. In 1967 the 4740 cubic foot capacity covered hoppers were the successor to the earlier 4427 cubic foot design. PS responded to increasing demand for efficiency by the railroads and shippers alike, carrying more per trip then the earlier covered hoppers. Designed to carry bulk commodities, such as grain, these cars roamed the rails of North America for decades, attesting to their utilitarian functionality. This car type can still be seen today in service.

Thrall was a recognizable freight car manufacturing company in the 1960s to 1980s. Their designs still carry on today. The company focused on building specialized freight cars including high side gondolas, and rotary-dump gondolas for coal. In the 1980s, Thrall acquired five competing railcar manufacturers and became the largest such manufacturer of these cars in the United States. ..... /continued below

DC/DCC-ready with a NEM 21-pin plug
The EMD GP series locomotives became some of the most successful designs of the age. Produced from 1970s to mid-1980s the GP40-2 was quickly found in many different tasks of the railroad. From switching to pulling high priority freight trains across the country, these versatile locomotives brought the goods to North America. Many of these locomotives are now being rebuilt with ecologically sound emission control for higher population centers. A new era emerges as technology meets proven reliability for these EMD products.

RS-3
CPR #8428
ATH28670
DC/DCC-ready with a NEM 21-pin plug
ALCO built the RS-3 to respond to competition with EMD, Fairbanks-Morse, and Baldwin Locomotive Works. In the case of ALCO, the builder added more improvements to create new locomotive lines beyond the RS-2. ALCO produced 377 RS-2s versus the more successful RS-3s at 1,418.
The new model produced slightly more horsepower than the earlier design at 1,600 hp using Alco’s 12-cylinder, model 244 prime mover. Visually, the RS3 very similar to the RS2. Some railroads elected to employ theirs RS3 diesels in passenger/commuter service. It was appreciated for its versatility and reliability. RS3s were one of Alco’s shops more popular locomotives.

Rotary Snowplow & F7B Locomotive
CPR #403167 / #403167B
DC/DCC-ready with a NEM 21-pin socket
The Rotary Snowplow is a piece of railroad snow removal equipment with a large circular set of blades on its front end that rotate to cut through the snow on the track ahead of it. When snow is too deep, the railroads call on their rotary. The precursor to the rotary snowplow was the wedge snowplow.

In 2013, Greenbrier Companies introduced their new design of 89’ auto rack, the Multi-Max™. The new design allows for changing configurations from a Bi-Level to a Tri-Level (and back) without adding or removing decks. The racks are fully compatible with existing 89’ auto racks. To this date, most of the racks have been built on Greenbrier Companies’ own specially designed 89’ flat cars. These cars are commonly seen in cuts of other similar autorack cars or a solid unit train of autorack cars. Currently, almost 10,000 cars (with racks) are running on North American rails.

Nearly 1,500 Mexican built CNCF 5000 Boxcars were ordered by U.S. railroads in the late 1970s as part of the “IPD” incentive per diem boxcar boom. This was the peak of U.S. modern freight car production, however it wasn’t just limited to the U.S. builders as multiple U.S. railroads opted to purchase the 70-ton 50-foot boxcar from the Mexican freight car builder CNCF. .../continued below

The Thrall Car 2743 cubic foot gondola was introduced in 1995. This new 52' 6" interior length design was in response to the newly allowed increase in Gross Rail Loading (GRL) to 286,000 lbs (up from 263,000 lbs). This allowed an increase of the inside height from the previously standard 5'0" to a new standard of 5'6", giving it a 2,743 cubic foot capacity. Thrall produced over 6,700 of these from 1995 to 1999. The design resumed production under Trinityrail in 2005.

In 1973 Canadian National (CN) designed the safety cab, also known as the comfort cab, which featured a full-width nose that was intended to improve crew safety in the event of a collision. The first CN locomotives to feature this cab were GMDD GP38-2s and MLW M420s. GO Transit ordered the first safety cab equipped GP40-2s in 1973 with a three-unit order. CN then ordered their first safety cab GP40-2s from GMDD in 1974. .../ continued nelow
