Specialized load handling equipment has long been used to secure loads in railroad freight service. One of the most common forms used on flatcars is the addition of bulkheads to the ends of the car. Bulkhead ends not only make it easy to load pulpwood, but also keep regular items like lumber, building materials and pipe loads from shifting in transit.

It was the mid 1970s, and the incentive per diem box car boom was just beginning. New, brightly painted box cars seemed to appear overnight. Many were lettered for various short lines. FMC (Food Machinery Corporation) was a significant builder of many of these cars. The 50’ outside post, non-terminating end box car, became the foundation for new per diem cars built in the 1970s. The 50’ FMC cars also varied in door configuration and style to better suit each customer. These models can still be seen today in the modern railroading scene.

PS responded to increasing demand for efficiency by the railroads and shippers alike, carrying more per trip then the earlier covered hoppers. Designed to carry bulk commodities, such as grain, these cars roamed the rails of North America for decades, attesting to their utilitarian functionality. The Thrall Car 2743 cubic foot gondola was introduced in 1995. This new 52' 6" interior length design was in response to the newly allowed increase in Gross Rail Loading (GRL) to 286,000 lbs (up from 263,000 lbs). This allowed an increase of the inside height from the previously standard 5'0" to a new standard of 5'6", giving it a 2,743 cubic foot capacity. Thrall produced over 6,700 of these from 1995 to 1999. The design resumed production under Trinityrail in 2005.

These six-axle, 4,000 hp engines are still in service today in North America.   .../ continued nelow
