A Curbside Classic for Post-1930s Layouts

Not too long ago, prototypes for the Walthers Cornerstone HO Scale Al's Victory Service Gas Station could be found at every busy city intersection and along most major highways. Premium was 25 cents a gallon, maps were free and restrooms were clean. There was a mechanic on duty who could fix anything. And Al always wore a spotless uniform when he came out to pump your gas, check the oil and wash the windows. Introduced in the late 1930s, box-style stations like Al's this sprang up from coast to coast and remained a standard well into the 1950s.

Shoehorned alongside mainlines and sidings, these businesses sold coal for home heating by the bagful or the ton and delivered to your house. Commercial accounts like small factories and stores were also serviced. As oil furnaces became common, many dealers expanded their line to include home heating oil too. The Walthers Cornerstone Western Coal Flood Loader puts big action in a small space on your railroad. With today's "just in time" coal delivery, meeting customer schedules demands equipment that's up to the job. Based on large-silo coal loaders, flood loaders like this are now used in both eastern and western coalfields. Essentially storage silos that hold tons of coal for quickly loading unit train gondolas and hoppers, these large structures are fed by conveyor systems from mines and coal processors or washers that can be miles away - perfect for adding a large industrial shipper along your railroad without modeling the huge associated mine shaft or pit - it's implied it's somewhere off the layout!

From the 1900s to the 1980s, the prototypes for facilities like the Walthers Cornerstone Greatland Sugar Refining could be found on railroads large and small. All through the day and night, a steady parade of gondolas, ancient hoppers, ore jennies, even a stock car or two rumbled into the yards. Seldom used branches and sidings groaned under the weight of cars piled high with sugar beets of another campaign (harvest). All across the line, extras rushed the crop to the refinery where the beets were processed into refined sugar. Sugar mills were among the most interesting - and busiest - of all the industries found alongside railroads.

Modern cement is made in special plants consisting of several buildings, each handling a step in the manufacturing process. Various raw materials arrive by rail and are kept under cover in the material storage building. Next, a conveyor moves these materials to the kiln building, where they are mixed in measured amounts.  Valley Cement includes a beefy bulk material storage building, corrugated-metal processing structures, concrete silos with an attached hopper car loading facility, a tall smokestack and covered conveyors.

The Walthers Cornerstone HO Scale Grain Conveyor is an ideal addition to any diesel-era grain elevator or feed mill scene. Conveyor "legs," or elevators, lift wet and dry grain using an endless bucket conveyor. At the top, the funnel-shaped distribution head routes grain into the proper pipe, sending it cascading into storage bins, surge bin, covered hopper or grain truck. A typical grain operation has two or more legs, with at least one each dedicated to incoming wet or outbound dry grain.

From the earliest days of railroading bridges like the Walthers Cornerstone Trestle with Deck Girder Bridge have been used to cross low spots, streams and other obstacles. In many cases a trestle was a cheaper, faster option for keeping construction moving. Trestles consist of a series of piers, called bents, which support the track. Wood was the favored building material until the 1940s, and many survive on branches and less busy lines to this day. Where piers could not be erected, such as in a flowing stream, a highway, or across another railroad, a deck girder bridge would be installed as part of the structure.

These big barges feature a flat deck with up to three sets of tracks, allowing for quick movement of virtually any rail car over water. These "floating rail yards" were especially common in big city harbors and on many inland rivers, in many cases providing the only rail connection to the main line. Since they were unpowered, they required the services of a railroad tug to move them from point to point. The basic design was used for decades, so many steam-era veterans lasted until the end of operations on most lines and several still operated into the 21st Century.

Once a common sight on big city harbors, the prototypes for the Walthers Cornerstone HO Scale Railroad Tugboat were specialized versions of the familiar tugboat. In order to improve visibility over freight cars on the deck of a car float, the railroad tugboat was built with a taller pilothouse. Starting in the 1920s, many railroads began modernizing their fleets with diesel-electric tugs. Not only did they use similar technology to the then-new diesel locomotives, many were painted in the same colorful schemes. These newer tugs remained in service for years, with a few serving new owners yet today.

As an alternate to costly train sheds, North American railroads tried three distinct styles of station platforms including the Busch, Umbrella and Butterfly types. Of these, the Butterfly (so named because of its up-swept, wing-shaped roof) was cheaper to build and eliminated the maintenance headaches of other designs.
