Introduced in the early 1960s, the Trailer Train (now TTX Company) F89F flatcar has been a mainstay of contemporary railroading. A product of Bethlehem Steel Company’s (BSC) Johnstown, PA plant, over 9,000 of these (89’ 8” over the strikers) cars were built throughout the 1960s. Visually distinctive from other long flatcars of their era thanks to their “C” channel side sills, these versatile cars were adapted for many types of service and loadings over the years, ranging from Trailer-On-Flatcar (TOFC), to autoracks, to structural steel loading. ..... / continued below

Pullman Standard introduced the all steel PS-1 box car in several diffent sizes including 40’, 50’ and 60’ lengths. Multiple door configurations and styles made these box cars very flexible. Pullman Standard had their own signature details, such as rolled non-terminating ends, and bow-tie stamped metal roofs. These were signature elements that identified the PS-1 among the other freight car builders of the time.

Specialized load handling equipment has long been used to secure loads in railroad freight service. One of the most common forms used on flatcars is the addition of bulkheads to the ends of the car. Bulkhead ends not only make it easy to load pulpwood, but also keep regular items like lumber, building materials and pipe loads from shifting in transit.

It was the mid 1970s, and the incentive per diem box car boom was just beginning. New, brightly painted box cars seemed to appear overnight. Many were lettered for various short lines. FMC (Food Machinery Corporation) was a significant builder of many of these cars. The 50’ outside post, non-terminating end box car, became the foundation for new per diem cars built in the 1970s. The 50’ FMC cars also varied in door configuration and style to better suit each customer. These models can still be seen today in the modern railroading scene.

One of the greatest innovations in intermodal transportation came in the late 1970s with the development of the double stack container car by ACF Industries and Southern Pacific Railroad. From that point onward the container was king and the railroads and car builders searched for more efficient methods of transporting containers. In a revolutionary step from the early stack car designs, Gunderson introduced their Maxi-Stack 5-unit articulated well car in 1988.

GP40-2
CPR #4611
ATH18258
DC/DCC-ready with a NEM 21-pin plug
The EMD GP series locomotives became some of the most successful designs of the age. Produced from 1970s to mid-1980s the GP40-2 was quickly found in many different tasks of the railroad. From switching to pulling high priority freight trains across the country, these versatile locomotives brought the goods to North America. Many of these locomotives are now being rebuilt with ecologically sound emission control for higher population centers. A new era emerges as technology meets proven reliability for these EMD products.

RS-3
CPR #8428
ATH28670
DC/DCC-ready with a NEM 21-pin plug
ALCO built the RS-3 to respond to competition with EMD, Fairbanks-Morse, and Baldwin Locomotive Works. In the case of ALCO, the builder added more improvements to create new locomotive lines beyond the RS-2. ALCO produced 377 RS-2s versus the more successful RS-3s at 1,418.
The new model produced slightly more horsepower than the earlier design at 1,600 hp using Alco’s 12-cylinder, model 244 prime mover. Visually, the RS3 very similar to the RS2. Some railroads elected to employ theirs RS3 diesels in passenger/commuter service. It was appreciated for its versatility and reliability. RS3s were one of Alco’s shops more popular locomotives.
