The Pennsylvania Railroad was noted for its unique structures and the Walthers Cornerstone HO Scale PRR Block and Interlocking Station captures the family look of the railroad's buildings to a tee. On the Pennsy brick towers were used along the line at busy junctions, interlockings and other block stations. Inside operators shepherded trains through complex trackwork by lining signals and turnouts. When steam ruled the rails, the prototypes for the Walthers Cornerstone Concrete Coaling Tower were familiar sights at every engine terminal. Some also stood alone on main lines, ready to service passing trains that might require refueling along the way. While early designs were made of wood, later models were made of fire-proof concrete. Hoppers of coal would be spotted for unloading above a covered dump pit. Lifting machinery hauled he coal to the top, where it was stored in the bin. Gravity and positionable chutes took over, delivering a steady stream of coal into waiting tenders below.

The Carfloat Apron structure consists of a moving apron (similar to a bridge) that can be locked to the float. This keeps the tracks aligned during switching and allows the barge and the apron to move up and down with the tides. Counterweights and lifting machinery are housed in the towers at the end of the apron.

The Walthers Cornerstone Operating Single-Track Railroad Bascule Bridge is based on one of the most popular designs with railroad engineers. There's always plenty of action wherever railways meet waterways. Here, you can often find lift bridges, designed to move up to provide clearance for passing ships. Hinged at one end, the bascule design opens like a jacknife. It requires less space, has fewer moving parts and can be partially opened to clear vessels of any size. A Curbside Classic for Post-1930s Layouts

The Walthers Cornerstone Western Coal Flood Loader puts big action in a small space on your railroad. With today's "just in time" coal delivery, meeting customer schedules demands equipment that's up to the job. Based on large-silo coal loaders, flood loaders like this are now used in both eastern and western coalfields. From the 1900s to the 1980s, the prototypes for facilities like the Walthers Cornerstone Greatland Sugar Refining could be found on railroads large and small. All through the day and night, a steady parade of gondolas, ancient hoppers, ore jennies, even a stock car or two rumbled into the yards. Seldom used branches and sidings groaned under the weight of cars piled high with sugar beets of another campaign (harvest). All across the line, extras rushed the crop to the refinery where the beets were processed into refined sugar. Sugar mills were among the most interesting - and busiest - of all the industries found alongside railroads.

Modern cement is made in special plants consisting of several buildings, each handling a step in the manufacturing process. Various raw materials arrive by rail and are kept under cover in the material storage building. Next, a conveyor moves these materials to the kiln building, where they are mixed in measured amounts.  Valley Cement includes a beefy bulk material storage building, corrugated-metal processing structures, concrete silos with an attached hopper car loading facility, a tall smokestack and covered conveyors.

The Walthers Cornerstone HO Scale Grain Conveyor is an ideal addition to any diesel-era grain elevator or feed mill scene. Conveyor "legs," or elevators, lift wet and dry grain using an endless bucket conveyor. At the top, the funnel-shaped distribution head routes grain into the proper pipe, sending it cascading into storage bins, surge bin, covered hopper or grain truck. A typical grain operation has two or more legs, with at least one each dedicated to incoming wet or outbound dry grain.
