From the earliest days of railroading bridges like the Walthers Cornerstone Trestle with Deck Girder Bridge have been used to cross low spots, streams and other obstacles. In many cases a trestle was a cheaper, faster option for keeping construction moving. Trestles consist of a series of piers, called bents, which support the track. Wood was the favored building material until the 1940s, and many survive on branches and less busy lines to this day. Where piers could not be erected, such as in a flowing stream, a highway, or across another railroad, a deck girder bridge would be installed as part of the structure.

These big barges feature a flat deck with up to three sets of tracks, allowing for quick movement of virtually any rail car over water. These "floating rail yards" were especially common in big city harbors and on many inland rivers, in many cases providing the only rail connection to the main line. Since they were unpowered, they required the services of a railroad tug to move them from point to point. The basic design was used for decades, so many steam-era veterans lasted until the end of operations on most lines and several still operated into the 21st Century.

Once a common sight on big city harbors, the prototypes for the Walthers Cornerstone HO Scale Railroad Tugboat were specialized versions of the familiar tugboat. In order to improve visibility over freight cars on the deck of a car float, the railroad tugboat was built with a taller pilothouse. Starting in the 1920s, many railroads began modernizing their fleets with diesel-electric tugs. Not only did they use similar technology to the then-new diesel locomotives, many were painted in the same colorful schemes. These newer tugs remained in service for years, with a few serving new owners yet today.

Flour mills have changed dramatically since the water-powered mills of the 1800s. Back when America moved by horses instead of horsepower, the local feed mill was an important trackside customer in towns of every size. Here, all types of grains were ground for animal feed and then bagged for easier handling and storage. They're still going strong in areas where livestock and dairy production requires a constant supply of feed. Many of those still in use have been expanded to include multiple modern concrete and steel elevator silos. Others serve suburban customers with pet foods, bird food, lawn and garden supplies and more.

Not too long ago, prototypes for the Cornerstone Al's Victory Service Gas Station like Al's could be found at every busy city intersection and along most major highways. Premium was 25 cents a gallon, maps were free and restrooms were clean. There was a mechanic on duty who could fix anything. And Al always wore a spotless uniform when he came out to pump your gas, check the oil and wash the windows.

The Walthers Cornerstone Icehouse and Icing Platform brings back the heady days of railroading when fast freights forwarded meat and produce to market in ice-cooled reefers. From the 1880s to the 1970s, ice-cooled reefers were a fixture of railroading. Solid trains raced across country with their perishable loads riding in long strings of refrigerator cars. Supplying ice for the cars in transit was a huge industry. Railroads built ice houses and platforms, like this kit, about every 250-300 miles. Here, entire trains could be serviced and on the move in minutes.

The prototypes for coal and oil dealers like the Walthers Cornerstone Goldenflame Fuel Co. were well known to everyone in town. Shoehorned alongside mainlines and sidings, these businesses sold coal for home heating by the bagful or the ton and delivered to your house. Commercial accounts like small factories and stores were also serviced. As oil furnaces became common, many dealers expanded their line to include home heating oil too.

Seen alone or in groups wherever oil is found, Walthers Cornerstone Walking Beam-Horse-Head Oil Pump kit is a great way to model a part of this vital industry anywhere on your N Scale layout. Finding oil is hard work - and so is getting it out of the ground. If the oil is thin enough and there's enough underground pressure, it may flow into the well on its own. This may continue for a few hours or a few years, but in time, the pressure drops. Today, nearly 95% of all US oil wells require pumps to stay in production and one of the most common is the walking beam or horse head.
